Quick Bread

“What are we going to make?” the campers eagerly asked as they hurried into the baking class. First, I taught the importance of food safety (specifically hand washing) while working with food. After a quick overview of measuring, campers took turns measuring the ingredients for banana muffins. Some campers were surprised to learn that brown, very ripe bananas make the most flavorful banana bread.

While the muffins baked, I shared a story about “quick bread” from the Bible. Genesis 18 tells about Abraham warmly greeting three unexpected guests and offering some refreshments. He then told his wife Sarah to quickly take fine flour and make cakes. Meanwhile, he instructed a servant to quickly prepare the high-quality calf he selected. Abraham generously served the guests a full feast. Now that is an example of ancient fast food! More impressive than Abraham’s lavish hospitality is the message of the guests. They announced that within the next year, Abraham and Sarah, even though they were elderly, would have the son that God promised.

Each group of campers enjoyed eating the muffins they made. They also enjoyed swimming, playing games, creating art, singing, campfire time, a sunset hike to the cross, and talking with friends. During the chapel times, they learned about Abraham’s faith, the descendent of Abraham who is the Savior, and how their faith in Him can make them right with God. I enjoyed visiting with the campers and hearing what they learned at camp.

Like Abraham, Morning Star Ranch has hosted guests. In the last year we have served over 1,200 people as campers and guests representing 1,600 camper days of activity. This involved 4,500 meals. We pray that each guest understands the message to believe the God of Abraham. He keeps His promises!
