The Next Generation of Urban Leaders

At the World Impact Teen Center, we have a vision to see unchurched youth in our community come to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior and be equipped and empowered to walk in their Kingdom calling. We believe that the youth are the next generation of urban leaders in their households, workplaces, schools, churches, and communities. This past summer, we took our discipleship program students on a missions trip to Fresno. The students led a sports camp for kids in the park, then shared a drama and gospel messages. They were so encouraged by the impact they were able to have and we started to pray about what it would look like to have an impact in our community in South Los Angeles.

Recently, we met with the Assistant Principal of the inner city high school located across the street from the Teen Center about the potential of serving the school. After a good conversation about what it could look like to partner, the Assistant Principal invited us to have the students start a Christian club that would meet in the school weekly! This was a huge answer to prayer for an open door to share God’s love in the school and our surrounding community. The club’s emphasis is to equip students in their faith, with a focus on serving our community. We went back and shared this vision with the students in our youth group and discipleship program and they were excited about the opportunity to have an impact at their school.

They named the club “Just Live It,” which is focused on taking action in our faith. Erron Harris, who is leading our Kaleo Youth Groups, is facilitating these meetings at the school. He is equipping the students to take full ownership of the club and take action in the justice issues that are on their hearts. It is exciting to see young people use their gifts, knowledge, and talents to demonstrate compassion and justice. We are praying that God would teach these young leaders through this to walk in their Kingdom calling for the rest of their lives.
