The Urban Ministry Institute

The Urban Ministry Institute (TUMI) is transforming lives across the country—in cities, churches and prisons—and across the world—in places like Romania, India and Africa. TUMI equips leadership for the urban church, especially among the poor, in order to advance the Kingdom of God. Their single passion and desire is to identify, empower, and release laborers who can both display and declare God’s Kingdom reign in their neighborhoods.

One student who has been greatly impacted by his TUMI classes says:

“Learning that knowing Jesus is an action verb and that if I am truly a disciple of Jesus Christ I will get involved in the ministry has motivated me to be a Soldier for the Lord. I have been a Christian for many years.  And even though I was ready to go to spiritual war for the Lord, I knew I didn't have the weapons I needed for war, and no idea how to use the little weapons I possessed. However, since I got involved in TUMI, I feel I have been in a spiritual ‘boot camp’ training for battle. I have learned sound doctrine, which has motivated me, not only to continue training, but to put what I have learned into practice. I also learned that there is a ministry for each of us and that it is important that we follow through with our calling, because we can change the world one person at a time, starting with our families, our neighbors, our communities, our inner cities, etc.  And sooner or later, the Gospel will take hold of the hearts of the lost and will turn the sinners into saints.”

TUMI provides affordable seminary training for men and women in the urban context. TUMI’s Capstone Curriculum is comprised of 16 courses that provide urban leaders with theological training to facilitate church planting movements among America’s unchurched urban poor. The focus of the curriculum is to invest in those called to evangelize, disciple, plant, and pastor churches in unreached urban neighborhoods.

The curriculum is designed specifically to accommodate many of God’s chosen leaders in the city who are poor, who have not been traditionally educated, and who do not live near a seminary. The Capstone Curriculum is intentionally structured to be culturally relevant for urban leaders and their daily lives.

The TUMI curriculum and resources are being embraced by urban leaders in America and across the world. Through the training and empowerment the teaching provides, lives are being changed and communities are being transformed.
