World Impact established a presence in Fresno in the 1980s in response to the invitation of a group of local churches with a shared vision to reach the poor in the city. Initially our efforts focused on after-school Bible clubs for neighborhood children, sports options for teens and summer camping. As our missionaries continued to meet needs and build relationships with local families, adults responded to our invitation to join Bible studies. The long-term commitment of our missionaries has resulted in a variety of opportunities to connect with our neighbors and to celebrate as God transforms our city.
We currently support nine church plants and are dedicated to empowering and equipping urban leaders to extend the hope they have found in Jesus to their neighborhoods.
The store is housed in the World Impact Center and receives donations of clothing, household items and furniture from churches and supporters in the Fresno Area. Profits from sales go to support our ministry. We have a crew of faithful volunteers who staff the store. Sorting of donations goes on non-stop; it is one of the projects we include on schedules for visiting missions groups. Currently, missionary staff manages the store and oversees the volunteers;but we are praying for a couple, perhaps retired, with retail experience to take over management and enable us to keep it open more hours each day.
The Urban Ministry Institute
World Impact Fresno has been offering training through The Urban Ministry Institute (TUMI) since 2002. While the training is thorough and rigorous, we do not have any requirements for admission other than a recommendation from the student's pastor. TUMI has attracted serious and diligent students to take courses. Receiving TUMI training has given a number of our students competence to enter ministry in preaching, church planting and pastoral ministries.
