We Are Not Alone

I didn’t know what to expect when I attended the Evangel School of Urban Church Planting. But my time with the dynamic sessions, challenging content and insightful private breakout coaching workshops gave me a fresh vision, a God-given confidence and camaraderie with other brothers and sisters from diverse backgrounds. I left equipped to do one thing: spread the fame of Jesus in our urban communities.

It was extremely encouraging to see various ministries from different racial backgrounds come together with a passion to see the Gospel spread in their own urban contexts. The inclusive teaching style of all the speakers drew us in and engaged us all. Our coaches were able to empathize with the struggles of each of the different ministries represented and walk us all through tough questions without immediate solutions.

I walked away from my experience at Evangel excited to apply what I had learned in my own church plant. I was encouraged to know that I am not alone in this endeavor to see Christ glorified in the inner city. Our hope to see many saved, our joy in the midst of trials, our witness in the face of adversity, was all grounded in what Christ has done for us. The teachers and coaches emphasized that the power and strength of making disciples in an urban setting does not come from within us but from God. I saw it when we all sang together in praise and worship before we started every session.

It was beautiful to see all these leaders and pastors attending this conference, seeking wisdom on how to reach their communities, crying out in song with gratitude and dependency on Christ and Him alone for what He has done and will continue to do in their own ministries. We cannot do this apart from God. And it is with that mixture of clear, precise instruction and passionate hearts toward God that I was blessed by my time at Evangel.
